Help I need ideas

I have run out of ideas.. can anyone help?

I have machine embroidered 17 [ so far] Beatrix Potter blocks for a new baby quilt and I now need to think about the blocks joining it all together.

I do not know the sex of the baby so do I use plain fabric and do a simple embroidery design on it? Patterned fabric? Check fabric? or or or!
